settling in

We started enjoying ourselves a little once summer peeked over the horizon.

Some things were unlovable, like how sap and bugs rained down on our house from the tulip tree we parked under. Earwigs and ladybug larvae reigned supreme. Spiders wandered in search of mates. Aphids swarmed the windows.

Parked on grass, we were far from level. Water and small things would roll off the countertop. We’d lose our balance often. The kids would fall down occasionally for no apparent reason.

Then there was the rocking. Every movement, every step, start, turn, squat, bend and roll would rock the bus a little. You’d sneeze and it would rock for a few seconds. We got used to it, but it was something to get used to.

Other things were wonderful. We began to realize how lucky we had gotten in finding this place. Beautiful view, friendly neighbors, expanses of green grass. Animals, bugs, birds, fresh air, blue sky. We began to appreciate the abundance of windows. You could always look out and see trees, grass, something green.

It was warm, bright and fresh, just like our future.
